The urban youth choose free mobile apps over text messages

The urban youth choose free mobile apps over text messages Apps inspire youth to communicate creatively Traditional cost-incurring SMS seems to have taken the backseat over the past few years with the massive growth of internet calling, and mobile and PC applications that allow free messaging. With mobile internet, 3G, and free apps becoming common on the now-ubiquitous smartphones, the tech-savvy generation is moving on to more “fun” ways of communicating. The former DGM, Mobile Services (Operations and Installations) at BSNL, S. M. Hegde, admits that SMS usage has decreased. He said, “My son is also using mobile apps and free services rather than SMS.” A recent study by research firm Informa said that during 2012, around 19 billion messages were sent each day via chat apps, while SMS texts numbered 17.6 billion daily. However, Mr. Hegde says there is hardly any revenue impact on telecom service providers as income from SMS has merely shifted to data usage. ...

Youth Navigate Identity, Intimacy, and Imagination in a Digital World

How Today’s Youth Navigate Identity, Intimacy, and Imagination in a Digital World  No one has failed to notice that the current generation of youth is deeply—some would say totally—involved with digital media. Professors Howard Gardner and Katie Davis name today’s young people The App Generation, and in this spellbinding book they explore what it means to be “app-dependent” versus “app-enabled” and how life for this generation differs from life before the digital era.   Gardner and Davis are concerned with three vital areas of adolescent life: identity, intimacy, and imagination. Through innovative research, including interviews of young people, focus groups of those who work with them, and a unique comparison of youthful artistic productions before and after the digital revolution, the authors uncover the drawbacks of apps: they may foreclose a sense of identity, encourage superficial relations with others, and stunt creative imagination. On the other han...

APTITUDE Questions - Issue 12/2013

Aptitude APTITUDE SAMPLE PAPER Passage-1 The poor especially in market economies, need the strengthen that collectivities offer for creating more economic, social and political space for themselves, for enhancing their socio-economic well-being and voice, and as a protection against free market individualism. It has been argued that a group approach to farming, especially in the form of bottom up agricultural production collectivities, offers substantial scope for poverty alleviation and empowering the poor as well as enhancing agricultural productivity. To realize this potential, however, the groups would need to be voluntary in nature, small in size, participative in decision making and equitable in work sharing and benefit distribution. There are many notable examples of such collectivities to be found in varied contexts, such as in the transition economies. All of the bear witness to the possibility of successful cooperation under given conditions. And alth...

Interview Dressing - Matter the most

Interview  Dressing - Matter the most ‘Suitably dressed’ in an interview situation really refers to understanding your prospective employer. Comb through your network to find a current or former employee you can ask, look up the company’s Facebook page to see if they have posted pictures of employees – that will be your first clue as to how you should dress for the interview. We often hear the ‘be yourself’ mantra, but what if you are most comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt? That may not work for interviews at companies where formal dressing is the norm. Consider ways in which you can stay yourself, and still be closer to what the situation demands. For instance, you could team a black/dark coloured pair of jeans with a full-sleeved shirt, or wear it with a solid t-shirt and add on a semi-formal blazer. Putting your best foot forward is easier if it’s a comfortable pair of shoes or sandals! Apart from basics like well-polished shoes and clean sandals, make sure you don’t w...
